You can rough out a dot-to-dot puzzle from any photo by hand: trace the main outline, place dots along it at the corners and curves, then number them in the order you’d want someone to connect them. No software required — just a printed photo, tracing paper, and patience.
The basic method
- Pick a simple image. High-contrast, uncluttered photos work best — a single object or silhouette, not a busy scene.
- Trace the main outline onto tracing paper (or a printout you don’t mind marking up).
- Place dots at every corner and curve — anywhere the line changes direction is where a dot belongs. Too few dots and the shape won’t hold together when connected; too many and it stops looking like a puzzle.
- Number the dots in order, following the outline as a single continuous path where you can.
- Redraw clean — a final copy with just the numbered dots, no reference lines.
Where this gets hard by hand
Keeping a single continuous path (rather than the pen jumping around the page) is the trickiest part, especially on a complex image. It’s also slow — a few hundred dots by hand is a real afternoon’s work.
